Are you looking for a way to lose weight that doesn't involve running, walking, aerobics or going to the gym? Most people would categorize surfing and wakeboarding as fun activities rather than weight loss activities, but this is not necessarily the case, because you can easily lose weight through surfing, wakeboarding and other fun and exciting water based activities, as long as you keep some basic things in mind.
- To get the most out of surfing, wakeboarding, body boarding and other water activities, you should warm up and do a little stretching first. Since you're near the water already, you may consider warming up simply by jumping around in the waves for a bit. Get yourself used to the water, and warm your muscles up. Once you are feeling more limber and more comfortable, you can move onto a basic stretch and then hit the water. Stretching and a warm up will allow your muscles to become more pliable, as you are more prone to injury when they are stiff and cold.
- Right off the bat, you should realize that you are burning calories and therefore losing weight when you are swimming out to find the wave. Swimming is an excellent way to burn calories, especially in the ocean where the waves are working against you. Natural resistance from the waves allows you to build stronger, leaner muscles, and also allows you to burn more calories than activities that do not involve resistance. It is like the difference between running on flat ground and running up a hill.
- Once you find the perfect wave, consider how much strength and conditioning goes into getting you up onto your board. You begin on your belly, and have to launch yourself up onto your feet, holding your balance as the wave comes up at you. Maintaining balance works the muscles in your entire body, and not only does getting yourself up on your feet burn calories, but it also conditions your body from head to toe.
- Everything that is involved in surfing, wakeboarding and other water sports promotes weight loss, building long, lean muscles, and conditioning your body from head to toe. Surfing, especially, is a challenging sport that involves conditioning your body, fighting the resistance of the water, and getting in shape. Surfing may not burn calories the same way sprinting would, but it certainly works your body over well. After your first few surfing activities you will probably find yourself feeling the ache in your muscles, a tell tale sign that you have worked them out thoroughly and that they are feeling the results.
Below Daize Shayne
Born: May 21, 1978 Yucaipa, California
Daize Shayne is the triple threat on this list as she’s parlayed her looks, athletic ability and musical talent into successful surfing, modeling and music careers.
Daize Shayne first ripped it up on the waves and became a two- time longboard surfing champion before moving into modeling. The sexy babe has appeared in Maxim, Sports Illustrated, GQ, Teen, and she did a 16-page spread in ReadyGo Magazine Japan alongside Britney Spears. Needless to say, the camera likes her.
Daize Shayne’s first album dropped in 2005, titled Live Your Dreams and although she looks like she could be a pop princess, you won’t find anything soft on her CD. She loves old-school rock like Led Zeppelin, which is the flavor of her album.
Christa Alves
Born: May 30, 1989 Perth Amboy, NJ
Christa Alves can’t legally drink alcohol, gamble or club in the United States, but in surfing, age has never stopped her from tearing up the ranks.
Christa Alves has won multiple East Coast and National Junior Championships as well as the 2006 ASP North American Juniors Competition, and is the 2008 ASP North America Pro Junior women's champion.
She’s very committed to her sport, as she opted for home schooling throughout high school in order to spend more time surfing. If there’s a tournament around, she’s down to be a part of it due to her love for competition.
Karina Petroni
Born: April 22, 1988 American Canal Zone at the Isthmus of Panama
You are the result of what you spend the most time doing, and for Karina Petroni, she has become a pretty good surfer since she first took it on when she was just two years old.
Karina Petroni has been hyped as one of the best since she became the youngest surfer -- male or female -- to win the amateur championships. She won three amateur championships before adding Eastern U.S. and National Championships Titles.
She has many nicknames, from Shorty to Kitty Kat to the Maria Sharapova of surfing. The latter one isn’t hard to figure out, as this sexy blonde has found her way into Cosmogirl, Teen Vogue and FHM. You can keep tabs on her Escape Around the World series on YouTube.
Malia Jones
Born: March 27, 1977 Loma Linda, California
Malia Jones is not just a pretty face -- the fact that she’s smokin' hot has helped attract a lot of people to the sport. Malia Jones started surfing at a very young age and won her first major competition (the girls division of the United States Amateur Surfing Championship) at the age of 15.
Although Surfing Magazine was the first to spot her and ask her to model, she has appeared in Cosmopolitan, Glamour, People, Shape, and, last but not least, Sports Illustrated. A lot of people are willing to buy whatever she’s selling, which is why she has also done a number of television commercials for companies like American Express and Corona.
Layne Beachley
Born: May 24, 1972 Sydney, Australia
There’s Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls of the 1990s, Tom Brady's New England Patriots of the 2000s and then there’s Layne Beachley. Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but in female surfing terms, she’s been that dominant. Layne Beachley is considered one of the best ever in her sport.
She has won seven World Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006) and became one of the few women to ever compete in a men’s tournament when she earned an invitation to the Energy Australian Open.
You go to Mal Pais for the surfing. A single dirt road runs along the stretch of ocean, dotted with surf shops, outdoor restaurants and a single grocery store. There are iguanas and beach dogs, squirrel and howler monkeys and the bananas cost 10 cents each. But you’re not here for that, you’re here for the waves that come one after another, in a smooth curl, crashing again and again into whitewater. Everyone has the same idea. Sleep in until 8, make some pancakes at the hostel, grab your board and head down to the beach. Little kids are catching waves. I rented a $12 board for the day, strapped the leash onto my ankle and went into the water. You paddle into the waves, going forward five feet, then pushed back three. You make it past the breaking waves. There’s a moment of quiet, then a swell. You lay on your board, belly rubbing against the waxed surface and start paddling like mad towards the shore. You’re going! Sliding across the water, perched on a wave, trying to remember how to push up, and swing your feet beneath you into a standing position. You launch yourself up..Woo hoo! If you find yourself in Costa Rica, wondering if you should try surfing for the first time, I’d say go for it. Rent a board, make some surfer friends, have them push you in front of your first wave, then laugh when you promptly fall off (laughing is optional, but it’ s more fun). 4/ 9/ 2011 I just saw "Soul Surfer" the true life movie of an amazing surfer girl who Bethany and her story... Makes you want to smack yourself when you complain about the little things after seeing this movie. Lorraine Nicholson.. Jack's daughter is great! Yasmin Dar, Sonya Balmores and Christie Brooke are all totally superhot in this movie and all girls are onto big stardom. Watching this movie I was also totally amazed by the special effects to create one arm, click here.
