Portia de Rossi is an Australian actress best known for her roles as lawyer Nelle
Porter on the television series Ally McBeal and as Lindsay Bluth Fünke on the
television series Arrested Development. Her first significant role was playing a
young and impressionable model in the Australian 1994 film Sirens. Soon afterwards
she moved to Los Angeles and had guest roles
on TV shows before landing a role in the film Scream 2. She attracted international
attention when she joined the main cast of the Ally McBeal TV series in 1998 playing
lawyer Nelle Porter. She remained with the show until its end in 2002. In 2001, she
starred in Who is Cletis Tout? with Christian Slater. From 2003-2006, de Rossi starred
as Lindsay Bluth Fünke on Fox Television's critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning
series Arrested Development.
From 2007-2008, de Rossi appears in Nip/Tuck's 5th season as Julia McNamara's new
girlfriend Olivia Lord. She also portrayed John F. Kennedy, Jr.'s wife, Carolyn
Bessette-Kennedy, in a made for TV movie.
De Rossi, who was married for two years to documentary filmmaker Mel Metcalfe, is
now openly gay. From 2000 - 2004, de Rossi dated singer Francesca Gregorini,
daughter of actress Barbara Bach and stepchild of Ringo Starr. De Rossi dodged
media questions about her sexual orientation and the relationship during this period.
De Rossi was rarely pictured with Gregorini in public.
In a September 2005 magazine interview with The Advocate, de Rossi said that most
of her family and Ally McBeal cast mates learned she was gay because of tabloid
pictures of de Rossi and Gregorini in 2001. The couple broke up in late 2004 as de
Rossi began dating talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres. In 2005, de Rossi
officially came out and opened up about being gay in interviews with Details and The
Advocate.
De Rossi is currently living with Ellen DeGeneres in Beverly Hills, California.
5/17/08 Yesterday, TMZ broke the story that Ellen had announced her impending nuptials to girlfriend Portia de Rossi. Right before, the talk show host issued a statement, lauding the court's decision to overturn California's ban on gay marriage, adding, "P.S. I'm registered at Crate & Barrel." Problem is, someone then thought it would be funny to actually register in the couple's name. While Ellen and Portia are planning on tying the knot, they want to make sure that everyone knows that they are not registered -- anywhere.
Ellen and Mandy are currently spreading their cheer all over Italy. click here for photos. **check out the wedding video below.

April 2010... The Australian-born star, best known for her roles in Ally McBeal, Arrested Development, and most recently Better Off Ted, has signed a deal with Atria Books to publish a book chronicling her years of battling anorexia and bulimia in the public eye.

'I definitely had some pretty amazing willpower to get down to 82 pounds. 'And that's what I was holding on to. I didn't think about anything else.' Portia says of her mindset at the time: 'I would prefer to die than fail another diet.'
Once she overcame her anorexia, the five-foot-eight actress shot up to 168 lbs in a single year. In addition to hiding her eating disorders, the Australian stunner used to hide her homosexuality.
She met Ellen in 2001at a Rock the Vote event and describes in her autobiography how she was smitten at first sight. 'I remember being so excited and overjoyed to be around her that I can still recall the feeling of running after her back stage,' she writes.
The pair married at their Los Angeles home in 2008. 'Ellen has taught me not to care about other people's opinions,' she says in the book. 'Ellen saw a glimpse of my inner being from underneath the flesh and bone, reached in and pulled me out.

Actress Portia de Rossi talked about her battle with anorexia in her new book, Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and
Gain. From the age of 12, she already starved and binged and purged herself to reach her goal weight. Also, laxatives
were part of her everyday life.
From Australia, she migrated to the US to pursue an acting career. Her big break came when she was cast in Ally McBeal.
In one scene, she was required to be in just her undies and she was quite uncomfortable with her body. After the scene,
she decided to lose weight. She bought two treadmills – one for her apartment and one for her dressing room. She also
hired a nutritionist, Suzanne, who gave her a healthy eating plan of 1,400 calories a day. Portia wanted to lose more
weight so she cut back her calories to a 1,000 a day.
She lost weight.. way too much weight..
“Within weeks, my weight fell from 130lb (9st 4lb) to 120lb (8st 8lb), then 115lb (8st 3lb). But I still saw bulging thighs in
the mirror. I dropped to 800 calories a day and fine-tuned my workout. Every morning I ran for 45 minutes on the
treadmill. I followed that with exactly 105 sit-ups – I wanted to do 100, but the five extra sit-ups allowed for some sloppy
ones. If I had time, I would also do leg lifts: 105 with each leg.”
Portia’s wake-up call came when she collapsed in 2000 while filming a movie. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis and
signs of cirrhosis of the liver. Her potassium and electrolyte balance were at critical levels which threatened her organ
function. While she stopped starving herself, she now became bulimic and gained weight during this time. She went
from 82lb to 168lbs (12st) in ten months and decided to seek help from a counsellor for her eating disorders.
Now, Portia is happily married to Ellen de Generes. She overcame her eating disorders and is at a healthy weight. She
also learned to love and accept herself for who she is.
