The Fruit Fasting Challenge
Fruits and vegetables emerged at the top of the list along with beets
and beans coming a close second and third, respectively. "Yeah, but
what about meat?" I thought.
I consulted a holistic medicine practitioner, and she agreed with my
conclusions.
She indicated the best thing I could do was start fruit fasting at least
once a week and build it up to two days per week - increasing one
day every week until I did a fruit fast for at least 21 days.
At that point, she suggested, I should seriously consider expanding
my fasting and cleansing efforts with a total liquid diet - a juice or
water fast.
She wanted me to do a raw fruit fast for three weeks, go back to
normal food for three days, and then start water or juice fasting for
at least 14 days - 30 days of detox fasting would be even better,
she told me.
I was none too happy and felt nervous about her proposition. Yet
anything was better than staying as I was. I needed rapid weight
loss and detoxification.
Apples, Pears & Bananas
So this holistic doc was my introduction to the raw foods, vegan or
vegetarian movement.
I launched the fruit fasting effort with apples, pears and bananas.
They were cheap and were just "grab-and-eat" which was
convenient.
I went to the supermarket and bought enough to last me a week,
threw away all the junk from the refrigerator and pantry, and started
fruit fasting.
What I did was carry a bag in my briefcase with a
mixture of the apples, pears and bananas and a carry
jug I could refill with water throughout the day. I was
off and running. Whenever I felt hungry, I would open
the bag and grab a fruit.
Then I would drink large amounts of water - about a
gallon a day. It was not long, however, before the
hunger pains started hitting me. By the end of the first
24 hours I felt famished.
The solution, for me, was to drink even more water
along with another fruit. One thing about fruit fasting,
however, was that initially my tendency was to gorge
on bananas. I do not recommend this because
bananas are great, but actually are the most
"fattening" of the fruits.
So prep your "to-go" bag with few bananas and more
apples than pears. Eat any fruit you want actually, but
beware of bananas and honey dews. They are very
high in sugar.
Some Fruit Fasting Pointers
At one point, I believe it was day three, I felt hungry as
if I was not eating anything. I could eat three apples
and they would go right through me. That is normal.
Drink more water and eat another apple. The feeling
will pass right around day seven or eight.
I strongly encourage you to stick to fruit fasting until
you are able to do at least 14 days. That in itself will
change your life.
Or at the very least open doors of knowledge and
opportunity in your weight loss and fitness goals that
previously were not available.
You do not have to become a full-fledged vegan or raw
food practitioner to benefit from this, by the way.
In the Raw
Raw food advocates basically do not favor any food
that is cooked... period. No cooking, grilling, steaming.
If any heat is used, then it is not a raw food - they say.
The reasoning is that eating food as close as possible
to its natural state incites an exchange of pure energy
between the food and body. The person will feel more
energized and healthy.
Some benefits from the raw food diet are: a stronger
immune system, better digestion, emotional stability
and clear, vibrant skin.
Raw food advocates also emphasize the positive
environmental impact it yields. Agriculture is enhanced
and garbage production is reduced.

Fasting Precautions
In another section of this website, reference is made to
moving forward and eventually attempting a water
fasting campaign of 21 to 40 days.
One of our colleagues here has himself completed
such a feat and the results in his life are amazing, both
physically and mentally.
My concern with Water Fasting for longer than three
days, as I mentioned before, is that it can destabilize
blood sugar levels.
For this reason the person should be watched and, if
the symptoms become acute - including fainting spells
- the fast should be broken immediately.
You can still attain substantial fasting health benefits
with a juice or partial fast, at least until you feel better.
For the most part, what I can say from experience with
hundreds of patients that almost everyone would be
better off if they fasted regularly - at least for three
days at a time several times a year.
Take your time, but do it! Move up the fasting ladder
with certainty and caution.
Do it at your own pace. By the same token, do not
allow your body to be the one who controls you.
There will be times during fasting in which the body
will give you very uncomfortable symptoms - even
severe.
Yet in most cases these symptoms pass and you will
end up feeling better than ever.
You must learn to listen to your body and discern
when it is asking you to break the fast because there
is trouble, and when it simply is going through the
natural course of detoxification.
In truth, the body actually welcomes the break,
especially the liver and digestive system.
I personally think water fasting once or twice a week
would be perfectly safe medically for most people.
Longer water fasts of one week to 40 days would
require caution and should not be done hastily
Out of Gas
Be ready to feel the weakness when you enter the
second and third days of the fast.
Fasting health benefits are around the corner, but this is
the tough spot because you will feel like you are out of
gas. It may be difficult to get up and perform tasks.
When one has a cigarette or alcohol addiction one can
stop smoking or drinking completely.
But with food, the tables are turned because, after all,
food is needed to sustain life.
The point is that fasting is not intended for starvation,
but to pause and give the body time to cleanse itself and
heal.
Then the idea is that when the person starts eating
again, he or she will do it with a new sense of
responsibility and commitment to drop destructive
habits.
Permanent change is the true core of your fasting health
benefits.
The key is learning to eat to live, not live to eat.
Ketosis
Your brain uses glucose for calories (fuel).
Even if you are not doing anything, the body needs
calories to support the senses and bodily movements.
Glucose comes from carbohydrates; rice, starches,
beans, salads, fruits, cereals and corn.
How long can the reserves adequately supply the vital
functions of important organs such as the brain, heart
and kidneys, to name a few?
Where does the energy come from when you do not eat?
How many days of energy does the body store in a long
fast? Well, good questions.
When the body stops receiving food for a season, it
actually begins to burn fat for energy in a process called
"ketosis."
Stored fat does have a lot of toxins, but it also serves as
energy to keep the body going even though you stopped
feeding it.
So, amazingly, the hunger pains you feel when you are
fasting are NOT really hunger pains because -- in reality
-- you are not starving.
However, once ketosis has burned all the available fat,
the body will start actually eating living tissue. This is
the beginning of starvation.
Fasting should be broken immediately at this point.
Many persons who have done water fasts for longer
than 30 days say the hunger pains go away completely,
only to return with a vengeance around day 40 to 60 -
depending on their body weight.
That 2nd hunger is the real hunger - starvation. There
are no fasting health benefits in pushing oneself to this
point or beyond.
Somebody who is thin can probably not go 40 days
without eating. The energy reserves are scant.
Fasting & Exercise
Weight loss is a very simple equation. Calories in -
calories out. If the activity level you have uses up more
calories than you are eating, you are going to lose
weight - and vice versa to gain weight.
Fasting health benefits will be short-lived unless this
reality is internalized and acted upon.
The best solution, in my mind, is to increase activity
when not fasting. If you are fasting, limit your physical
activity to walking.
But our culture often does not want to hear about
exercise, diet and fitness. We want fasting health
benefits, but not the sacrifice that is required to obtain
them and keep them.
Millions sit in desks all day, snacking, at a computer,
sedentary and then go home and gorge on a huge meal -
then go to bed. Very few calories are used.
A quick note before we get further into dieting fasting
and the mind: Others can also sabotage your
progress if you let them.
There are many misconceptions related to fasting. it is
very possible that when you decide to launch your
water or juice dieting fasting effort, some of your
friends or family members may try to talk you out of it.
Gather as much information as possible of what you
are trying to accomplish and, by all means, share it
with close relatives or friends.
Stay close to them as you go through the process,
and do not hesitate to approach them for support -
especially during the first nine to eleven days when
hunger and withdrawal pains are at their peak.
But I suggest that you DO NOT trumpet your dieting
fasting intentions to a large group of people. If you do
so, you might have to endure endless opinions and
criticisms that will only thwart your motivation and,
even possibly, break your resolve
You will find how green tea can help you lose more
weight while you fast, in addition to giving you an
energy boost when you feel like throwing in the towel
from withdrawal symptoms and hunger pains.
In Search of Healing
A very close friend, aware of my son’s plight, one day
brought up the benefits of a so called -- lemonade
diet. She emphasized it was a wonderful cleansing diet
and a liver detox.
I was always searching for healing through natural
ways. But lemonade diet? Using lemons? I thought
she was pulling my leg!
Honestly, I had no clue what citrus could possibly do
to for our bodies, apart from quenching thirst on hot
summer afternoons. Still I listened to my friend with

you often get with a water only fast.

still allows you to lose weight.
Juice Fasting – Not Shakes

It is certainly not my intention to paint a rosy weight loss
motivation picture. Rather, I will make it a point to give
you REAL information that can lead you to achieve REAL
results - long term.
We want to offer you plenty of encouragement, empathy
and human support.
But it is you, and only you, who will have to walk through
the withdrawal and detoxification those first
uncomfortable seven to ten days.
As I have mentioned in other pages of this site, this initial
time period is the one the represents the greatest
physical challenge and discomfort due to hunger pains
and withdrawal symptoms.
Most People Don't Last 1 Day On The Master Cleanse
