Model Not Quite Skinny Enough for New York
Model Bianca Gomez, who was profiled by The Wall Street Journal last weekend,
tried again this week to break into the big time. But once again, the 18-year-old
model didn’t get cast in a career-making designer’s runway show.

Ms. Gomez, who is one of the most promising new faces with Next Model
Management, auditioned for more than 20 designers, and walked in two fashion
shows: Rock & Republic, a Los Angeles-based denim label, and Nicole Romano, a
young New York designer known for her colorful dresses. (Last season, Ms.
Romano asked Ms. Gomez to open her show in a saffron-colored frock because
“not many people look that good in yellow,” the designer said at the time.)
Amid the uproar over skinny models Ms. Gomez, who is 5′11″ and, at around 120
pounds, wears a size zero or size 2, was surprised when her agency’s show
booker told her she needed to lose some weight. At a presentation earlier in the
week, one designer criticized her because she couldn’t fit into a size zero pair of
pants. “She pointed to me and said ‘That one is on the heavy side,’” Ms. Gomez
recalled.

Ms. Gomez was going to return to California earlier in the week. But her agency got
a call from fashion photographer Steven Klein, who was interested in seeing Ms.
Gomez. He has shot ad campaigns for Versace, Calvin Klein and the famous W
magazine spread featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Yesterday she spent eight hours doing “light tests” with the photographer, in
hopes of scoring a Dolce & Gabbana advertising campaign, which he is shooting.

“I was so nervous, but after a while it felt comfortable,” said Ms. Gomez today, over
a lunch of California rolls and sashimi. “I hope I get the campaign, but if I don’t I am
still glad I got to work with him.”

After doing a shoot for Target, Ms. Gomez will return home to Azusa, Calif., on
Tuesday, where she says, “I will get a gym membership, lose some weight like
they told me to, and come back next season and kick some butt.” But if it doesn’t
work out next season, she says she wants to go to college so she can get
involved in the real-estate business.
