| 6/10/08 NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Adolescent girls with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa may reach normal height once they recover from the disease, new research suggests. However, growth may be permanently stunted in girls who suffer from anorexia for longer than about 2.5 years, according to the research conducted by Dr. Rajani Prabhakaran of Harvard Medical School in Boston and colleagues. Studies on the impact of anorexia on growth and stature have yielded mixed results. While anorexia might be expected to cause short stature, and some studies suggest that girls with the eating disorder are indeed shorter than normal, other research suggests they may reach their full height potential, or even be taller than average.During normal puberty, levels of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) rise, triggering a growth spurt, Prabhakaran and colleagues explain in the journal Pediatrics. Growth slows and eventually stops as estrogen levels rise. It's possible, they say, that this process of growth and bone aging is delayed in girls with anorexia, giving them a chance to reach their full potential height after they recover. To investigate, the researchers looked at 110 12- to 18-year-old girls with anorexia and 98 healthy controls of the same age. They followed a subset of both groups for a year, and also tested hormone levels over a 12-hour period in some of them. They estimated the girls' potential adult height based on the heights of their parents. They found that girls with anorexia had lower levels of IGF-1 than the healthy girls, although most had levels of the hormone within the normal range. They had relatively high levels of GH, suggesting that they had become resistant to this hormone's effects. The San Diego woman's father says a representative of the company told him it was "pulling the plug" on coverage of her hospitalization. Janell Smith's glowing smile and "bigger than life" personality helped her cover up the fact that she had the eating disorder, her family says. She kept it so secret, not even her sister knew about it. One day, says the sister, Dianna Wilson, Janell "took off the majority of her clothes, and when I saw how skinny her arms were and how her ribs out and all that, I was crushed." click here. 6/21/08 Children unhappy with weight, body image .. click here. 8/27/08 anorexia in the news.. click here. 10/2/08.. eating disorders hurt business... click here. 8/10/09 Anorexic Twins, first the original anorexic twins, click here and now the cheeky girls twins both suffering from anorexic behavior, click here. 9/1/09 what you might have missed about eating disorder news.. click here. |

Comparing our bodies to those of thin models is actually good for us because it encourages us not to get fat, according to Dr. Davide Dragone and Dr. Luca Savorelli from the University of Bologna, Italy. Moreover, they believe that diversifying runways to include women of different (i.e., larger) sizes might actually make obese folks believe that their weight is okay and encourage them to toss their celery sticks out the window. Dr. Savorelli and Dr. Dragone presented their research at the Royal Economic Society's annual conference in London this week, where they stated: If being overweight is the average condition and the ideal body weight is thin, increasing the ideal body weight may increase welfare by reducing social pressure. To promote chubby fashion models when obesity is one of the major problems of industrialised countries seems to be a paradox...Given that in the US and in Europe people are on average overweight, we conclude that these policies, even when are welfare improving, may foster the obesity epidemic. The researchers backed up their claims with evidence that people eat more when they look at pictures of fat people and eat less when they look at pictures of skinny people. Told you all thinspiration works for weight loss. And sure, what people see definitely impacts what they eat. The commercial starts off with a thin woman standing in front of an open refrigerator, agonizing over a luscious-looking raspberry cheesecake. "What if I just had a small slice? I was good today, I deserve it," she says. Maybe a bigger slice would be okay if she eats celery later—"they would cancel each other out, right?" she thinks. Or if she eats the cake while jogging in place? Have you seen it? If not I put it on this page plus tons of supermodel photos from July 2011 magazines.. Seriously this commercial doesn't seem triggering for me. What do you think? The 26-year-old, who tied the knot with Sam Cooper in the second week of June, admitted "throwing up" after every meal during her struggle to stay in shape like her contemporaries, reported Contactmusic. "I hang out with models, the biggest pop stars and, you know, really and honestly, I hate saying this, but none of them are achieving those body shapes by being healthy. "They''re not just going to the gym two hours a day. They''re not eating or they''re taking speed not to eat. In America everyone abuses that Adderall stuff and people aren''t normal," said Lily. click here for more Lily... |
