Born and raised in North London, Amy
spent her teenage years locked in her
bedroom, ears glued to classic song
chord changes. She got her first guitar
at 13. Her Brooklyn born, London
raised mum was into folk and Amy
counted Carole King and James Taylor
as early influences but soon found
herself drawn more to her dad's jazzier
taste, the likes of Sarah Vaughn and
Dinah Washington. Amy’s grandmother’
s fondness for Frank Sinatra was also
an early influence. Amy enrolled at the
Sylvia Young stage school in North
London, but was later expelled for 'not
applying herself' and wearing a nose
piercing. By the time she was 16, Amy
was spending her mornings appearing
with a Youth Jazz Orchestra, while at
the same time, developing a broader
musical education, with favourites that
included Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The
Roots, Erykah Badu. Gradually,
subconsciously, the smoking grooves,
jazz enunciation and feisty attitude
were coming together to form Amy's
own thing. With word around town
about Amy's unique abilities getting
louder she found herself a
management company and started to
work with producers. Island Records
got to hear the works in progress and
swiftly signed her to the label.

Amy Winehouse Was 'Too Heartbroken' To Perform
3/21/07
British singer Amy Winehouse cancelled her Los Angeles concert last night to
give herself time to get over her recent heartbreak.

Winehouse, 23, was devastated when she split from chef boyfriend Alex
Jones-Donelly earlier this month and due to her busy concert schedule in her
native Britain and America, she hasn't had the chance to grieve the loss of
the relationship.

The star was set to perform at Spaceland last night, but pulled the plug on
the gig earlier in the day. Winehouse also canceled two concerts in London
on 8-9 March, citing, "unforeseeable circumstances". A concerned friend
says, "Amy loved Alex so much and was so upset when they split.”

"Normally she would take time out to wallow like most normal young girls, but
she's just been on the road performing and doing interviews non-stop. She's
exhausted and miserable. She doesn't feel she can give the audience her
best while she feels this sad."
March 24, 2007 -- HARD-partying
Lindsay Lohan's has a friend in
red-hot singer Amy Winehouse, who
says she's worried about the recently
rehabbed starlet. "I want to coddle that
girl. I really want to hug her," the
British-born belter tells Giant
magazine. "I saw pictures of her
coming out of the doctor's [office], and
she's crying. She's holding papers in
her hand, like, 'Oh, it's a note from my
liver saying, "Dear Lindsay, I've gone
to Vegas!" ' "
